One word: COURAGEOUS
Although I was not alive, or thought of, at the time Mrs Betty Ford first made her mark on the world, I am well aware of who she is and what she stood for. During the 1970s, she was the First Lady who spoke her mind unapologetically and stood by her beliefs. Despite her Republican title, she was a liberal at heart… “She mused that living together before marriage might be wise, thought women should be drafted into the military if men were” (Associated Press, 2011).
I am most fond of her statements against abortion. At a time when many people spoke against abortion (including her husband, President Gerald Ford), Betty made an amazing statement… she said “Having babies is a blessing, not a duty”. Not your typical First Lady kinda statement, right? Betty Ford was just built that way… open, honest, and REAL.
She wrote a book “The Times of My Life” documenting her courageous life story. She lived her life candidly and showed the world that although she was in the White House, she was still just a normal person. She battled breast cancer… battled an addiction to pain medication and alcohol… and lived like a winner. Proud to be a woman. Proud to be American. Just plain ol’ PROUD. Her life was definitely well lived… no stone left unturned. That is the kind of life I would like to have… one where Im not walking on eggshells trying to please everyone. I’d like to live a life that is pleasing to God… that way when I die at the ripe age of 115 (fingers crossed?) I’ll hear Him say “Well Done”.
Mrs. Betty Ford lived to see 93 years on this earth. She will be buried next to her husband of 58 years, President Gerald Ford. May her soul rest in peace.
Job Well Done Mrs Ford. ♥
